Kids' Kitchen was set up by Nicola Brady in 2016, mother to 9 year old Jake and 6 year old Kate. Having completed professional training in Dublin Cookery School, Nicola took her lifetime passion for food and a keen interest in nutrition and Kids' kitchen was conceived.
Prior to starting Kids' Kitchen, Nicola worked for 20 years as a marketing professional. As well as her professional cookery training, Nicola holds a BSc and professional qualifications in Marketing and PR.
Nicola continues to upskill in specialist food areas as well as in the area of nutrition, a subject she believes is integral to any cookery lesson. Nicola is currently studying to be a Nutritional Therapist.
What we believe at Kids' Kitchen
- Cooking is a Life Skill. Yes, cookery is a life skill, but at Kids' Kitchen we also focus on fun, creativity and teamwork.
- Mess is good. Although we teach the importance of food hygiene and a clean working environment, we believe that mess is a healthy side effect of creative cookery.
- Recipes are a learning tool. Learning to interpret recipes and designing our own recipes gives an opportunity to focus on memory, numeracy and improvisation, all in an age appropriate way.
- Kids like control. Teaching children how to prepare their own food gives them a sense of control, encourages them to try new foods and shows them healthier ways of preparing foods that they already love.
- Knowledge is power. The health and nutritional aspects of the food we cook will form part of each lesson. Once we know what we are eating, it gives us great power.
- Budgeting is a life skill. In the teen groups, understanding costs forms an integral part of each lesson. Students will not only learn how to prepare food, they will understand how much it costs to make and how these costs can be controlled.
